THAT’S A HOLE LOT OF GLORY

- JORDAN GERRANS GOLF

WEST Australian Dennis Howe could only say “wow” when his tee shot fell in the hole at Gordonvale Golf Club’s par-three eighth hole earlier this month.

The 77-year-old has played golf for 17 years. He played tennis in his younger days, but decided to change to golf when he moved to the Far North, due to the heat.

The Gordonvale Golf Club member has played the course for about 14 years and was lucky enough to find his first ace earlier this month.

“I was really thrilled with it. You go through years of playing and thinking about something like this happening,” Howe said. “But, when it actually happens, it is like ‘wow’. It was pretty exciting.

“It was just one of those really good shots — it went straight as anything and straight into the hole. It was amazing. I hit it very well.

“You talk to guys that have been playing for 40 years and they have never done it, so for me, I have to thank my lucky stars.”

Gordonvale has a had an amazing run of holes-in-one lately.

About a month ago, club life member Graham Real landed a hole-in-one on the eighth hole, playing the FNQ Golf Veterans Christmas Breakup at Cairns Golf Club.

“Dennis got his hole-in-one on Gordonvale’s eighth hole on the third of January,” club Treasurer Dave Mullins said. “Hopefully one of our members or guests will get a hole-in-one on the eighth hole in February.

“Although I am sure they will accept any hole.”

IT WAS JUST ONE OF THOSE REALLY GOOD SHOTS – IT WENT STRAIGHT AS ANYTHING. DENNIS HOWE
