Bypass work begins

ACTION is finally starting on the $152 million Smithfield bypass with heavy machinery crews clearing vegetation next week – but it will leave things looking very bare.

The McGregor Rd roundabout is due to be cleared of all vegetation between Monday and Wednesday from 7am-5pm.

About 15 well established bismarck palms and a dense collection of other trees and undergrowth will all be removed.

Department of Transport and Main Roads acting Far North district director Ross Hodgman said it was necessary to allow contractors to access public utility services. “Due to the presence of electric ants, it is not possible to relocate any of the vegetation growing at McGregor Rd roundabout from outside the local area,” he said.

“All vegetation growing within the McGregor Rd roundabout will be removed and relocated to the south of McGregor Rd within the area affected by electric ants to stop them from spreading to new locations.”

The department has conducted environmental assessments and obtained the permits and approvals needed to cut down the trees.

“Environmental officers will be on site during the vegetation clearing to undertake fauna spotting and environmental assessment,” Mr Hodgman said. “The cleared vegetation will be disposed of in accordance with biosecurity requirements and recommendations.

“Once clearing is complete, the ground surface will be topsoiled and regrowth will be maintained as required.”

Changed traffic conditions will be in place, including temporary signage and manual traffic controllers.

Road users should expect minor delays and plan their trip accordingly.

The Smithfield Bypass is expected to be completed late next year.
