Prospective students poised for uni offers

HUNDREDS of Cairns school leavers will be excitedly hitting the refresh button on their internet browsers this morning as the major round of university offers is made for the year.

University offers, based on student applications, will be released by the Queensland Tertiary Admissions Centre through the QTAC online portal from 8.30am.

Anxious students across Queensland will be relieved at the granting of an early place in their preferred course, but a spokeswoman for James Cook University said it was not the end of the world if a majorround offer was not forthcoming.

“One thing that we work really hard at telling them is if their plans change, we always advise them to call the uni and we have advisers that can speak to them,” she said.

Cairns State High School graduate William Tucker, with an OP2, applied to the school of medicine at James Cook University.

“Getting in (to uni) will relieve a bit of pressure I guess,” he said yesterday.

“For a long time, things have been building up to this and it all really comes down to tomorrow. I am very excited.”

The JCU spokeswoman said today’s offers were made in response to applications in which prospective students ranked their preferences for a range of courses and tertiary institutions.

“Now is the time to consider your offer and your options, including whether your preferences have changed,” she said.

“We will be making further offers in most courses in February.”

CQUniversity’s manager of student admissions and advice centre, Susan Raschle, wished applicants the best of luck.

“It’s not too late for people who either still want to go to university to apply, or to change their preference,” she said.

QTAC’s John Griffiths congratulated applicants who received offers and advised those yet to be accepted that places were still available.

“Many courses still have vacancies, so if you didn’t get an offer today, or have changed your mind, there is still time to change your preferences,” he said.

Applicants who received an offer should respond by 9am on January 22. Further offers for semester one will be made on January 25.
