Who rules in driver’s seat?

-

THINK you’re an awesome driver?

I bet you do. It’s always somebody else doing something outrageous, potentially life-threatening or just downright annoying.

In reality, we all break the rules sometimes, we just don’t know it mostly.

A story on our website yesterday about “the 14 road rules no one knows” went crazy — and I must admit there were a few surprises in there for me too. Have you been guilty of a few of these?

Playing your music too loud: Fine $175.

Guilty. Mostly when I was younger and getting excited about a night out but nowadays it can be just driving home, excited that sleep is looming.

Flashing your lights to warn others of speed cameras. $50, one demerit point.

Not guilty. But I figure if people are flashing it’s a good thing. The government may not get the revenue but they get the desired result — people slowing down.

Driving too slowly. Penalty? Court imposed fine.

It’s illegal to obstruct the path of another car. I am guilty as charged of being frustrated by slow and inattentive drivers. They are a common occurrence in the Far North; I think they are mainly visitors and others on “island time”.

Eating, drinking, doing your makeup and changing music. Penalty? Court fine, three demerits.

Who hasn’t done one of these or all three in a mammoth bid to multitask? But does any of it beat Father Time in the long run? Probably not. We have so much responsibility when we get into the driver’s seat. I wonder if we ever truly appreciate just how much. Jennifer Spilsbury Editor
