THE Cairns Post is on the hunt for the Far North’s Top Tradie and we want you to help us find them. Do you rate a wizard with a nailgun or someone who keeps your home powered all year round? Electrician Ariahn Fauid and Boscon Constructions site supervisor Matt Ebejer know what it takes to make it in a trade. Could they take out the title?

TRADIES. They fix our airconditioners to keep us cool, make sure we have a leakproof roof over our heads and save us when our toilets overflow.

We can’t live without them and now Cairns Post wants you to tell us who you reckon is the Far North’s top tradie.

Boscon Constructions site supervisor Matt Ebejer started a carpentry apprenticeship at 18 and 11 years on he wouldn’t change jobs for anything.

Mr Ebejer said he loved building things with Lego as a kid and didn’t hesitate when a builder he knew offered him a job.

“I grew up in Sydney, but I’ve been in Cairns for more than five years,” he said.

“The best bit of the job is working with good people and being able to watch something come together as the project goes along.”

He said the most exciting project he had worked on was a duplex built on difficult, hilly terrain at 6 Diamond Cl, Stratford. “It was a bit different for Cairns particularly the quality of that project,” he said.

On the other end of the tradie scale, electrician Ariahn Fauid loves having the knowhow to help others.

Ms Fauid started off working in administration at an electrical company before deciding to take on an apprenticeship with the business.

“I’ve been an electrician for four years,” she said. “I really enjoy fixing things. I like being able to help get things working when a customer doesn’t know what to do.”

Mr Ebejer believes there are two stand-out qualities all the best tradies need to have.

“A tradie with the right attitude who can handle pressure and stress in any situation, and an eye for detail, are the most important things I reckon,” he said. “They might be the nicest person but if your work doesn’t reflect a really high quality, that won’t get you far.”
