Cairns crowned cycling’s hotspot

-

ENORMOUS growth in numbers of members, juniors and racing events have led to the crowning of Cairns Cycling Club as Cycling Queensland’s club of the year.

The announcement, made yesterday in Brisbane, capped an incredible year for the club.

In announcing the award, CQ said the club had increased its membership by 12 per cent in the 2018 calendar year.

A major part of that increase was in the junior program, while the club offered substantially more racing opportunities compared to 2017: a 14 per cent increase in criterium events and 40 per cent more road race events.

The club has shown no signs of slowing down.

The return of 100-lap events could be on the cards, pending the results of a survey now running on the club’s Facebook page, while members have already flagged their intention to compete at the national track championships in April.

The masters championships will be held after junior sensation Brandon Hutton (left) competes at the National Track Championships.

Cycling will again feature at the Great Barrier Reef Masters Games on May 24-26, with track cycling, a criterium and road race on offer for the country’s best masters riders.

The Tour of the Tropics has also been announced as the first event on the National Road Series calendar.

Tour of the Tropics runs from August 2 to 4, mainly on the Tablelands.

Cairns Cycling Club will hold its AGM at 7pm on Tuesday, February 12, at the Red Beret, Redlynch.
