Boat hull proves a striking canvas

A GOLD Coast indigenous artist has lent his talents to a Far North boat business, creating a striking design on a vessel set to cruise the waters of the Torres Strait.

Torres Pilots vessel Adolphus has set sail with images of sea creatures etched into its steel hull using sanders and grinders.

Neville Torrisheba, who goes by Torry, was a tradesman working on superyachts and was in Cairns recently helping with Torres Pilots projects.

He is based at Burleigh Heads on the Gold Coast and runs Indigifusion Art.

Mr Torrisheba said he’d never done such art before on a boat.

“From time to time, I still do superyachts and still work with a firm up in Cairns,” he said.

“It came out of curiosity – that’s my trade and I thought I’d see what it looked like.

“Applying art in that space was a bit of a trial, but I guess the possibilities are there to do it on more boats.”

Mr Torrisheba said many people had asked how he created such an interesting effect, but that was top secret.

He also expressed gratitude to Torres Pilots for allowing him to decorate their vessel.

Torres Pilots’ Lorraine Ferguson said the artwork and the process Mr Torrisheba took was “truly unique and amazing to see”.

“This vessel will be based in the Torres Straits,” she said.

“Our company provides pilotage to ships transiting in the compulsory pilotage areas within the Great Barrier Reef.”

Adolphus will head north today.
