Chautauqua return open
CHAUTAUQUA’S owner Rupert Legh a first flagged then dismissed possibility of the “Grey Flash” making a shock comeback to racing later this year.
Legh was interviewed on Brisbane’s RadioTAB yesterday where he revealed Chautauqua could be brought back into work and return to racing in the spring pending a stewards clearance.
This prompted an interesting debate on social media with some race fans hopeful of a miracle comeback and others imploring the champion be allowed to enjoy his retirement.
Legh later clarified the comments he had made on radio and said comeback plans for Chautauqua “won’t happen”. “He’s retired,’’ Legh said. The champion sprinter’s recalcitrant barrier antics led to his retirement last spring after he refused on seven occasions to leave the gates in trials,
Chautauqua often stood still in the stalls as the gates opened, stubbornly refusing to move despite the urgings of his riders.
But during yesterday’s radio interview, Legh didn’t rule out bringing Chautauqua back into training to make another attempt to get the champion racing again as a nine-year-old next season.
Legh even spoke about the possibility of taking Chautauqua to Hong Kong in December and Dubai next year.
