Garden dream flourishes

- ANDREA FALVO

FOR long-time Gordonvale resident Gill Cook, helping establish a community garden has been a labour of love.

After 18 months of fundraising, the Gordonvale Community Garden Club will officially open a new tool shed onsite today.

Along with receiving a $35,000 grant through the Gambling Community Benefit Fund, the club raised about $10,000 towards the project.

“I’ve lived in Gordonvale for about 40 years and it’s time to give something back …,” club treasurer, Mr Cook said.

“It’s been plenty of Bunnings sausage sizzles and stalls at the Gordonvale markets and selling all our recycling to fundraise the money.

“Also our worms farms, our native bee hives, our solitary bee hives have helped out.”

Mr Cook said once the wet weather subsided, they would start on some new plantings.

“The first part we’re starting on will be gardens for disabled people,” he said.

Member for Mulgrave, Curtis Pitt and Cairns Regional councillor Brett Moller are expected to attend today’s official shed opening.
