Rain records still tumbling

- ANDREA FALVO

SOME areas of the Far North have already surpassed April figures in the first four days of the month.

The weather bureau now expects records to tumble this month.

Mount Sophia has recorded 321mm of rain since Monday, surpassing the April 2018 rainfall total of 135mm and Tully Sugar Mill has had 263.5mm of rain in the first four days of this month, compared to the 231.7mm total in April last year.

Innisfail and Copperlode Dam have also cracked last year’s April rainfall total, recording 243.1mm and 224mm respectively so far this month.

Bureau of Meteorology forecaster Jess Gardner said rain would start to ease in Cairns from today, with less than 10mm a day forecast for the next few days.

Unfortunately for those in the Cape York Peninsula, there’s no immediate relief in sight, with possible storms and rain north of Coen expected today and tomorrow.

In the Lockhart River area, more than 100mm of rain a day is forecast over the next few days.

A minor flood warning is in place for the Daintree River and Mulgrave River, while there is a general flood warning for the Russell River.
