AUSSIE RULES SUPERCOACH.CAIRNSPOST.COM.AU AFLW star turns down Gold Coast

- TOM BOSWELL

AFLW GOLD Coast have failed in their bid to lure one of the AFLW’s biggest names to the club while their attempted raid on neighbours Brisbane has begun.

The Suns were eager to secure the services of Western Bulldogs co-captain and Queensland product Katie Brennan, who is one of the AFLW’s premier forwards.

Gold Coast sought to gauge Brennan’s interest in a potential move back home but were quickly told by her manager it wouldn’t be happening.

Brennan originally hails from the city of Logan, located just south of Brisbane.

The 26-year-old played her juniors at the Logan City Cobras and then Yeronga before shifting to Melbourne in 2013 to join the Darebin Falcons.

Brennan still returns to Queensland in the off-season and regularly spends time training with Gold Coastbased Joey Hayes at his Ultimate Sports Performance gym in Miami.

But Brennan now considers Melbourne home and while a move could be on the cards, it is likely to be to Richmond, who are also chasing her.

Meanwhile, the Suns have met with Brisbane Lions ruck Lauren Bella ahead of the AFLW sign-and-trade period, set to begin on Monday, April 8. The Lions can lose up to eight players to expansion clubs and Bella is one of multiple former Gold Coast academy products the Suns are interested in.

The former under-18 AllAustralian was selected by Brisbane with pick 45 of last year’s draft and played the opening three games of the season before missing out on selection due to a combination of form and health issues.

Gold Coast made a pitch to the 18-year-old at their Carrara headquarters on Thursday and Bella is now weighing up her future.
