Coach’s words fire up United

- MATTHEW MCINERNEY

FOOTBALL WHEN Mareeba United Bulls coach Perry Krakowcysk opened the Weekend Post, he didn’t expect to find the motivation for his team’s fourthround FNQ Football Premier League win against Innisfail.

Cutters coach John Salongi predicted his side would travel to Mareeba and trounce the Bulls 6-2, which he based on the belief in his attackers to fire.

Krakowcysk didn’t have to say much to motivate his team at all – Salongi had done it for him – and the Tablelands crowd certainly let the visitors know.

It was Mareeba’s attack which shone at Lindsay Australia Stadium.

They scored four goals, including a drought-breaker for captain Jamie Carroll, and held the hyped Cutters scoreless at the other end.

Krakowcysk, understandably, was more than happy with how his team responded after a 5-2 beating at the hands of Edge Hill United last week.

“I was pretty delighted,” Krakowcysk said.

“It’s about time we got what we deserve. We played well despite the past few weeks.”

Krakowcysk turned to youth to give his side the extra energy and enthusiasm it needed to claim its first win of the year, fielding three teenagers against a side determined to take home the three points.

Krakowcysk admitted there was plenty of work left for his team to do, but warned the Bulls were just getting started.

“That four-nil could’ve been eight or nine,” he said. “We need to be more lethal in our finishing. We’re playing good football, but we can still improve.

“Jamie scored a goal, which will do wonders for his confidence, and our young fellas did extremely well.”

Mareeba United will host Stratford on Sunday evening as they chase two consecutive wins. Innisfail will travel to Edmonton to play Southside.
