ATHERTON

ANOTHER miserable week weatherwise, Wednesday sporters had nine players brave the drizzle. The winner was Swifty Finlen 42 nett; NTP 13 D Morrison; and least putts Irish 14. Thursday ladies washed out as was the Friday chook run. Saturday’s Atherton Decor-sponsored stableford was weather-affected. No ladies’ comp. The wet track cancelled Sunday’s Yungaburra Butchery stableford. This week, again weather permitting, Wednesday sporters play stableford, Thursday ladies a Carrington Hotel-sponsored stableford, Friday Trinity Petroleum six-hole chook run followed by goose club draw at 6.30pm, including members’ jackpot joker $150. Saturday is the BWSsponsored Turner Shield stableford and Sunday the Yungaburra Butchery medley stableford. MILLAA MILLAA

MAD dogs and Englishmen go out in the midday sun apparently. So how do you describe the Millaa Millaa Golf Club members who did actually show up to form a competition this Sunday for the Captain Bob Collyer Trophy Day? All of them knew the weather wasn’t going to be dry and even the mad dog Englishman avoided comp. So were they mad, barking mad, Becontree (two stops from barking, google it) or just plain keen. Very keen. One of the field said his wife suggested going grocery shopping together, so he chose wet golf instead. A modest but brave field hit the links to contest a stableford event. Thanks, Bob, it would have been hard yards as a stroke. Some racehorses are known as mud larks for their ability to perform well on a heavy and damp track. Well, Royal Millaa Millaa has one now in golfing terms with David Welch absolutely demolishing the field with Winx-like bolt to come in with 44 points 80 off the bat with a form golfer chasing him in his group. Well done, Dave, even the scribe witnessed a red hot chip in birdie on their penultimate hole. We are all wondering if Kelvin was the anchor holding you down. While everyone shook David’s hand in congratulations, the club handicapper was rubbing his together saying this is going to hurt. Daylight was second from Dave, but the card wasn’t marked correctly. David Gibson got that honour with a solid 39 points (cracking back nine in case of a countback) and Alan Hapgood third with 38pts leaving a heap of points out on the course with his Parkinson’s-Tourettes-style chipping. Ashley Healy was fourth with 37; NTPs 1/10 Ash and the bolter David 5/14. On the side bets, the clash of the Taylors was one for the ages. Visitor brother Mick won the chocolates over member Greg by 4pts. Great to see visitors (or reluctant drag-alongs) play in the comp. Thanks, Dylan Williams, who really needs a driver when he can smash a three wood for miles, for visiting to witness David’s epic round. Next week we play for the Malanda RSL/Falls Teahouse monthly medal. Lets hope for some sunshine before then.

RAVENSHOE

FIRSTLY, a big thankyou to members of the local community, in particular Miranda and Rob Niven for helping Jo Klease on Saturday morning. Jo was selling tickets for the club when some opportunistic youngsters decided that they would target the raffle money. Thanks to quick responses from community members and the attendance of the Ravenshoe police, the culprits were caught in a matter of minutes. All money was recovered. It finally was fine enough for a fun three-ball ambrose on Sunday. All who participated enjoyed a fun afternoon. Winners for the day were Shane, Peter and Emily with Jim, Johnny and Kev taking the runners-up prize. Special mention to Ian Donaldson for winning the longest drive. Among the newcomers, Jessie and Karina deserve special mention. Hope to see more of your prowess in the future, ladies. Dave Cassells captured the chook again this week with Jo Klease being the best putter. Next Sunday is an 18-hole stroke event for the patron’s trophy. With championship events soon to start, it is time to get your game into gear after the prolonged wet weather. Good golfing and CU at the 19th.
