Port Douglas trophy home snapped up

A TROPHY home at Port Douglas has sold for an undisclosed amount of more than $5 million in one of the biggest sales in recent years.

A luxurious five-bedroom, five-bathroom home at 2 Murphy Street was snapped up by a Melbourne family and follows a number of high-end sales in recent months.

The buyer plans to use the stunning home, which boasts spectacular views overlooking Dickson’s Inlet and the Daintree ranges, as a vacation base.

Sotheby’s director and seller Barbara Wolveridge said it was the highest sale since a property at 7 Wharf Street was snapped up for a cool $6.8 million.

“This was a huge sale,” Mrs Wolveridge said.

“We’ve seen a big lift and sold a lot of properties between $1-2 million, and obviously this one was at the top end.

“I think the Sotheby’s brand is really starting to establish itself in Port Douglas and we are the go-to agent for beautiful high-end homes.”

The international realtor has sold close to $15m in property in Port Douglas since March.

Ms Wolveridge said the market had improved substantially in 2019.

“Last year was very quiet but the market has improved especially the high-end properties,” she said.

“Having said that, we’ve also sold a lot of homes around the $500,000 mark and have beautiful homes for under a million.

“The beauty of our office is anyone coming to see us is doing so for a reason.

“We don’t get timewasters here at the beautiful Saltwater complex. It’s a fabulous location and we love it.”

Meanwhile, the median house price in Port Douglas has risen to $740,000, an increase of over $100,000 since March. Realestate.com.au figures show the median price for a two-bedroom unit has fluctuated between $243,500 and $255,000 since October last year.
