REIGNING Taipans MVP Melo Trimble has taken a shot at Far North basketball fans, declaring they were “bored” during games last season.

The American point guard, who made a big-money switch from Cairns to Melbourne United in the off-season, has landed back in Australia for his second campaign in the NBL.

Trimble claimed the 2019 Taipans MVP and Members Choice MVP but as soon as he has put on United colours – the 24-year-old has fired a shot across the bow to the fans that provided him those awards.

Victoria’s capital has had clubs like St Kilda Saints, South East Melbourne Magic, South Dragons and Victoria Titans, among others, go under, but Trimble reckons Melbourne is more of a basketball city than Cairns.

“I am excited to be here … in Melbourne; it is more of a city and I am ready to start playing,” Trimble said in a video released by his new club.

“The atmosphere in Melbourne, it is a basketball town. I feel like Cairns was not as focused on basketball as much as it is here in Melbourne.

“In the arena in Melbourne, everyone is excited about it and not just there to be there and be bored about it. They are there to watch basketball and good basketball and cheer loud. I am looking forward to it, even when I was playing in Cairns I played here and wanted to put on a show.”

Far North hoops fans will not need to wait long to react to Trimble’s comments with the Melbourne United point guard set to return north early in the 2019-20 season.

Trimble will be front and centre in the Snakes’ second home game of the season, while Cairns are away to Trimble and his United on Boxing Day.

“Every time I play I always look to put on a show,” he said.
