Sydney FC friendly a boon for FNQ players

Benefits of top level encounter will remain with clubs into the future

- MATTHEW MCINERNEY

FC’s visit to Cairns this week is more than just an opportunity for 23 local footballers to play against the ALeague champions, it’s about the legacy which will fuel football for years to come.

That’s the view of FNQ Football administrator Alex Srhoj, who along with FNQ Technical Development Officer and rep coach Reggie Davani fronted media yesterday ahead of the blockbuster preseason friendly.

The 23-man squad to represent the FNQ Select XI was named yesterday, while six members of Sydney FC’s ALeague grand final winning team will take the field at Barlow Park on Saturday night.

“Excitement is probably an understatement,” Srhoj said.

“For our region to be represented by players from all of the clubs, to play against the champions is a dream come true for some of these guys.”

Davani has shown faith in the players who represented FNQ against their Townsville counterparts last month, while the inclusion of several more players will ensure each member gets ample opportunity to play against the glamour club.

With three Premier League games to be played Sunday, Davani will limit players to about 50 minutes against the Sky Blues, who are coached by Innisfail product Steve Corica.

“The way it’s worked out, all of the club teams will play the next day and the local clubs have been fantastic with their support in moving games,” Srhoj said. “The more kids and local players who get the opportunity, the better.”

But the former Papua New Guinean international’s advice to his troops this week is to play with no fear and enjoy the experience sharing a field with the best team in the country.

“When you play in these occasions, you have to look at it in a way you enjoy it because they don’t come around that often,” Davani said.

“Just relax and play your game. Enjoy it, have fun, it’s a great occasion for everyone.”

While the game itself is important given continued talks of a long-term deal between the region and the Sky Blues, Srhoj said the club’s week-long stay in Cairns could have lasting benefits for the local game.

“The legacy, the fact we can get them for a five-day camp, rather than a one-off game, is even better,” Srhoj said. “As far as being able to leave that experience behind, the five-day camp is absolutely fantastic and you’ll see the benefits long-term in club land.”
