Table awaits at Our Place

Greek-Med flavours at Tablelands eatery

- ALICIA NALLY alicia.nally@news.com.au

ENJOY the taste of the Mediterranean next time you’re in the Tablelands.

In the space vacated by Flynn’s, David and Loren Norton have opened Our Place, a cute and cosy eatery which is the culmination of all their many and varied hospitality experiences.

While Mr Norton, the chef, is trying not to pigeonhole the business as an Italian restaurant, he features Mediterranean-based Greek foods with unique Australian ingredients such as rosella and lemon myrtle, to ensure each dish stands out.

The couple used to own Coffee 21 on Lake St before deciding on a new adventure after the kids left home.

“My wife worked at Thala Beach Nature Resort and we spent a few years working on Hamilton Island. Loren is front of house extraordinaire,” Mr Norton said.

“Our children are grown up and have left the nest so it is time for a change and a new challenge. When we saw this restaurant come up for sale we thought it’d be perfect.

“Liam, the previous owner, had it for 17 years, and similar to us he was after new challenges.”

Our Place is at 17 Eacham Rd and while it is closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, each Friday and Saturday night books out well in advance.

“The locals are really showing a lot of support and quite a few people are coming up from Cairns,” Mr Norton said.

“One night lamb shanks might be popular and the next night the steak. The chicken supreme is very popular. I really wouldn’t say one thing is more popular than any other at this stage.

“We’re big on supporting local producers … we try and source as much from north Queensland as possible.”
