On other matters

In 1965 Barry McGuire fervently warned us we were on the eve of destruction. Like Barry we’re still here and the world is still spinning.

Credlin’s opinion piece (CP, 21/11) is so flawed that it’s hard to know where to start. She fails to mention the retired fire chiefs and their stance on bushfires and climate change. She fails to mention that controlled burns were not possible this past winter in many parts of NSW and Queensland, because it was too hot, dry and windy for their execution. Listen to the scientists and stop demonising a minor political party.

Joanne (CP, 21/11). I’m more concerned with the Morrison LNP government’s reduced funding for Medicare “public hospitals”. Also students, people on

“Newstart” and pensioners struggling to feed themselves. One asylum seeker granted medical treatment by our democratically elected Federal Government is not the pressing issue here.

Democrat, Cairns (CP, 21/11) Re: William, I used to believe the same thing but there’s a problem with the argument that Australia’s emissions are so small that we shouldn’t bother with action. If all the countries with less than 2% share of global emissions take that same view, it’s equivalent to around 40% of global emissions not being reduced. It’s a global problem and requires a global response; we can’t just point the finger at China. While I’m not personally a fan of the per capita emissions rhetoric, it does make a compelling case but is too often disingenuously thrown around by leftists trying to denigrate their own country. Simple fact is no developed country in the world has a sufficient climate emissions reduction plan that keeps warming below 1.5 degrees. Sam, Edge Hill

Watch BBC on Foxtel channel 649 this Friday, November 22, at 8.30pm. This is the main reason why tourist numbers to Cairns continue to decline. Who fights this negative publicity? Not TTNQ. Not Tourism QLD. Not Tourism Australia. Cairns is slowly dying.

Tony, Cairns

Cairns Ring Road $110m. Captain Cook highway $370m. Peninsula Development Road $190m. Edmonton to Gordonvale duplication $481m. Total $1.151b. But still no money to secure Cairns’ water? No duplication of Copperlode Dam?

Six hours on phone at Centrelink (CP, 21/11). My gosh anyone would have a brain snap. I guess the staff had time for morning and afternoon tea with lunch thrown in while this poor man was disrespected. Any compensation for the victim? I’ve experienced 2 hours and it’s no joke, worse still when you get to talk to a real person they’ve never heard of Cairns. Pensioner, Kanimbla
