OBSERVATIONS FROM THE CAIRNS TAIPANS’ TWO ROUND 10 NBL GAMES OVER THE WEEKEND.

-

WEEKSY HAS NOT LOST HIS TOUCH

Former Taipans guard Jarrad Weeks is keeping his old Cairns traditions alive. A few seasons ago, Weeks and teammate Damon Heuir used to lead crazy bench celebrations when their club scored their first points. When Glen Rice Jr landed a triple early in the first term on Friday night, Weeks ran down the Breakers bench and made it look like he was lighting his teammates on fire.

The Snakes bench was mustwatch three seasons ago because of their antics.

ROB WAS BACK QUICKLY

When speaking to the Cairns Post on Tuesday of last week, former Snakes big man Rob Loe was unsure when he would be back for the Kiwis.

The way he was talking, Loe was likely to travel to Cairns for the game but just be a spectator after fracturing his skull a few weeks ago.

But the stretch forward was straight back into the Breakers line-up and came from the bench after five minutes in the first term of the Round 10 clash and showed some positive signs after his long injury lay-off.

THE START WAS HOT ON SUNDAY

The Snakes could not have played much better in the first term on Sunday, limiting the Kings to just 19 points and finding 30 of their own.

Sydney could only land one of their eight attempts from downtown while the visitors splashed 4-7 from deep, with two coming from instance offence Mirko Djeric.

The bench shooter was missed last month for a short period with his back concern but hit his first three shots on Sunday and showed exactly what he can do.

BRUCEY WOULD HAVE LOVED IT

After training with the Taipans last season without landing a contract, Shaun Bruce would have enjoyed giving his old club a few buckets on Sunday.

The clever 28-year-old guard had seven first-half points and continued his great bounce-back season that he is having with the Kings.

“He is proving a lot of teams wrong,” commentator Andrew Gaze said in the third term of the clash.

Bruce finished with a huge 17 points.

CASPER IS LEGIT

Taipans fans will remember the Sydney Kings leading man running down Cairns last season when he was with Melbourne and he threatened to do it yesterday afternoon.

Casper Ware was quiet for much of the night but caught fire late on and gave his team a chance of an unlikely come-from-behind victory.

He fouled out with 23 points and seven assists as his efforts fell just short.

Scott Machado, though, got the win and the points for the point guard contest against Ware.
