Think outside box on festive party spending
THE vast amount of consumers using online shopping platforms has led to more Australians jumping on the DIY partyplanning bandwagon.
Websites such as Amazon and eBay continue to grow in popularity, making it easier for people to plan their own events this festive party season.
But impulse purchases made by quick mouse clicks can lead to money being wasted, so it’s important you know how to use the platforms first.
Shopping platform eBay has more than 11 million monthly users and eBay Australia communications specialist Emma Lowde said people could save on DIY parties by sticking to a strict budget.
“Aussies spent more than $15 million shopping on eBay for wedding items last year,” she said.
“Always do your research to ensure you’re getting the best price.”
Amazon Australia savings specialist Penina Petersen said the key to planning an affordable party was to organise everything ahead of time.
“I wouldn’t personally hire an event planner,” she said.
“Most things in life are cheaper if you do the research.
“If products in your order are eligible and over $39 you can get everything delivered for free.”
Mrs Petersen suggested thinking outside the square.
“I turned our clothesline into a Valentine’s Day Chinese restaurant, strung up red lanterns inside, bought little lucky red fortune cards and created a menu offering different food options,” she said. “This was a hit and cost very little.
“Save by bringing nature inside, like greenery from your garden for centrepieces, recycle delivery boxes and use gift wrap to dress up drab spaces instead of spending too much.
“Adding candles throughout the home gives it a welcoming feel.”
Events company My Perfect Party has hosted more than 150 parties in the past year and owner Allison Barrett said you should be careful ordering online.
“We have clients go online and order heaps of decorations they don’t know how to use or how to install,” she said.
“Event planners can save you money. We have industry contacts, can negotiate with suppliers and know how much to buy.”
An AliExpress spokeswoman said online purchasers should: • more orders in one shop to save on delivery costs. • favourite stores because fans received discounts. • for discounts when purchasing multiple items from one shop.
• sellers’ terms and conditions, as commissions or freebies may be available when sharing products.
