Beraht doesn’t find race win heavy going
BERAHT carried the big weight on Saturday at Atherton and now his stable will aim the gelding towards a Cairns Lightning Handicap come carnival time next year.
The five-year-old lugged the massive 65kg around Morrow Park to score by almost three lengths, his eighth career victory and second in his last five starts.
The Janel Ryan-trained sprinter has won around carnival time in FNQ before, claiming a Class 6 Plate (950m) by almost two lengths at Cannon Park in September last year.
Ryan stable representative Ronnie Ryan believes the locally owned gelding can turn his recent two non-TAB wins into competitive form once the big boys land in the Far North from down south next year.
“He is very honest,” Ryan said.
“Probably next year, we will need to start looking at Lightnings and races like that, in my opinion.
“He can run his times and I think he would not look out of place against the better class horses.
“That is going on the times he has been running around the track.”
Beraht was a winner at the Sunshine Coast, Rockhampton and Gold Coast earlier in his career when in the yards of Stuart Kendrick and Jared Wehlow.
Meanwhile, local apprentice rider Scott Gittos has suffered torn ligaments in his foot from his barrier incident at Atherton on Saturday.
The 3kg-claiming hoop‘s mount Maxhenry reared up in the barriers and Gittos got his foot stuck. Yesterday he said he still could not put any weight on his foot.
The Cannon Park-based jockey was again set to visit his doctor late yesterday and will spend a period of time away from race riding.
Elsewhere, dual-licensed Tablelands jockey-trainer Stephen
Wilson is hopeful of being back riding within three months following his recent elbow complaint.
The 33-year-old, who has been one of the top riders in the north over the last few years, has not ridden in a race since the middle of September and is keen to be back in the early stages of 2020.
