The club will be closed over the Christmas/New Year period after the selected pairs game on Friday, December 20, to reopen on Tuesday, January 7, 2020.

Club championship singles game played this week saw Chad Hughes def Wayne Hart 25/18, in an exciting game with the lead changing several times.

The Gilmore trophy was played for on Saturday, December 7. The Christmas luncheon to end the year’s competition will, sadly, be the last between the Tablelands and Cairns clubs due to the increase in costs and the lack of new players. The Tableland clubs will still play interclub games, but no more visits will be made to or from Cairns. The teams on the day were made up of players from all clubs. The winners were Bev Butland from Westcourt, Walter Sitco (Manunda) and Jean Somerville (Mareeba). Second were John Radalj (Manunda), Lyn Beagley (Westcourt), Dale Rogers Jones (Malanda), and Gloria Sitco (Manunda). Third were George Greenslade (Manunda), Kathy Bradford (Mareeba), Bob Wilson (Malanda) and Lois O’Brien (Malanda). The booby prize was awarded to yours faithfully, Paul Quinlan, and Gloria Egan (Tolga club), assisted by Joyce

Webb (Mareeba). Our patrons of around 30 years, Tom and Sally Gilmore, were in attendance to present the trophies on a rather sad occasion, and were thanked with a presentation from the association. Cheers, Paul Quinlan, president, Tablelands Indoor Bowls Association.

Social bowls on Thursday saw 24 bowlers brave the hot conditions for a good afternoon of bowls. A big thank you to our patron, J. Morrison, for supporting a great afternoon of bowls on Saturday. Winners of the day were S. DellaPosa, P. Broccardo, Wazza and T. Dorrington. Runners-up being B. Anderson, S. Pagano and Squeak. During the week, J. and G. Edgerton continued their run of great bowling, defeating P. Anderson and J. Fossey in the mixed pairs final. G. Edgerton is to play S. Pagano in the men’s consistency singles final this week. P. Anderson defeated G. Edgerton in the mixed consistency singles. The club is introducing a game of open twilight bowls on Wednesday for a 5:30pm start. One game of 16 ends to be played. Anybody and everybody is welcome to support the fixture in the cooler hours of the day. Don’t forget Sunday, December 15 is our presentation and Christmas goose afternoon. Come down and support the club.

Winners and runners-up in the club championships this year will be presented with a small prize of their achievement, during the morning tea break on Sunday, December 22. Recipients are on the games board, it would be great if all could be there to accept prizes around 11am on that day.

Nomination forms for 2020 club competition are on the board, fours and A pairs will close mid January and played February onwards, Singles will close early March and be played in two rounds over two Saturdays in March/April.

Ladies – Wednesday 4th Social, the few ladies that turned up for our last day had a great afternoon with lots of fun and laughs. Gabbi we hope that everything is going OK with your leg. West Cairns Ladies Bowls will start up again on Wednesday, January 15, 2020. We wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a safe and Happy New Year.

Twenty-three players participated at West Cairns Bowls Club last Monday for the last game this year. Winners were Jeanette McInnes, Margaret Lindsay and Wally Smith. Our next game will be on January 6 next year starting at 1.30pm with the cards being drawn at 1.5pm. We hope to see all of our current players and visitors at the game.

Next week all financial players are invited to our Christmas luncheon being prepared by West Cairns chef Joel. All members should be at the club by noon as the meal will be served at 12.30pm. The Annual General Meeting is scheduled to be held on January 20 and all members are encouraged to nominate for any positions on the new committee. Nomination forms will be available from January 6.
