Flights need screening

-

I AM astounded and dismayed that all flights from Asia to Cairns are not being met by health officials (CP, 28/01).

It is quite possible that the coronavirus may be passed easily due to flight networks throughout Asia. I cannot believe such a simple measure is not being undertaken, especially given the hundreds, if not thousands of Chinese tourists visiting our city during Chinese New Year.

If we have a dengue outbreak, council would be on top of it. Why is not council demanding that incoming flights are screened?

Speaking of which, where in the Cairns CBD is there even a mention of those visitors who have chosen to come to Cairns for Chinese New Year?

There are no banners in the CBD streets, nothing to designate or celebrate this event for overseas visitors, or even to respect our local Australian-Chinese community. Mayor Bob Manning wants more money through the proposed visitors tax, but seems to not be able to enact a simple welcome. Poor show. Jasse Walton, Trinity Beach
