Up to four Suns for camps in Far North

- JORDAN GERRANS

AS many as four Gold Coast Suns-listed footballers are on the way to the Far North later this month for their 2020 AFL Community Camp.

The Suns’ camp will land in Cairns on Thursday and Friday of next week, and will coincide with academy zone camps in Townsville and Rockhampton as well as the Northern Rivers in NSW.

This time last year Gold Coast Suns players and Cairns Saints products Jacob Heron and Caleb Graham paid a visit to St Andrew’s Catholic College as part of the annual camp.

Later this month, the Suns players will visit some schools and run clinics, including a super clinic on Thursday at Cazalys Stadium from 4:30pm.

Which players will visit is still up in the air with an NEAFL pre-season game scheduled for the Saturday, just hours after the FNQ visit.

“We are going to have an education session for colts and youth girls after the super clinic,” AFL Queensland’s Cairnsbased game development and talent manager Kieran Daley said.

“We are looking at heading to Cape York House for breakfast on Friday before heading out to schools.”

In its 18th year, the AFL Community Camps provide an opportunity for football fans across the country to access the game, with more than 750 AFL players set to visit local schools, football clubs, nursing homes, hospitals and community centres. Established in 2003, the AFL Community Camps have reached more than 1.5 million school students across 7500 schools and over 48,500 people in aged care facilities and hospitals.

Meanwhile, Centrals Trinity Beach product Michael Selsby has been included on the Suns’ NEAFL list for season 2020. Selsby played in the NEAFL last season as a junior but has been selected on the AFL club’s supplementary list for the NEAFL.
