Ex-Dragon Robson slays pre-season at Cowboys

- SAM FLANAGAN

REECE Robson packed his bags and flew more than 2200km north in the off season in search of opportunity.

On Friday night he’ll get just that.

Robson has been named on North Queensland’s bench for their clash with the Brisbane Broncos and will officially begin his new life as a Cowboys player.

The hooker said he was deside termined to make the club’s top 17 since he arrived from the St George Illawarra Dragons.

“I’m really looking forward to it,” Robson, above, said.

“For myself, to put on the jersey for the first round game I’m very excited.

“Everyone coming into preseason wants to put their best foot forward. That was a goal of mine to try and get into this and I’m looking forward to Friday night.”

Robson has spent the last four months working closely with Jake Granville and said he’d enjoyed picking the brain of the premiership winner.

“He’s obviously a great player and very high calibre,” he said. “All through pre-season I tried to learn as much as I could off him.

“I’ve tried to implement a few things I’ve learnt off him into my game and I think that will help my game go forward.”

Robson said his family will be travelling up and be part of the 25,000-strong crowd on Friday night at Queensland Country Bank Stadium.

He’s hoping to make their trip worthwhile.

With the likes of Payne Hass, Tevita Pangai Junior and David Fifita to wind up from the back fence, Robson said he looked forward to mixing it with the Broncos’ pack.

Paul Green didn’t hint how big a role Robson would play on Friday but said he’d earned his spot in the side.

“He’s new to the club, has settled in really well and put his best foot forward over the pre-season training period,” Green said.

“He just needs to come on and do what he does best.

“He’s got a number of strengths. He certainly rolls us onto the footy well but he can also give us a bit of width in attack and he’s a solid defender.”
