CHILLEMI DELIVERS DOUBLE

- JORDAN GERRANS

HE HAS done it hundreds of times before across his accomplished career and master Tablelands horseman Roy Chillemi delivered two more youngsters their first wins yesterday at Cannon Park.

Three-year-old filly Bet On Love and four-year-old gelding Buoyancy had been bashing down the door in recent weeks to break their maiden statuses and did so with ease yesterday.

Buoyancy did it in the first of eight races while Bet On Love made it career win No.1 two events later.

Chillemi, a perennial trainers’ premiership winner in north Queensland, is edging towards 1200 lifetime winners, according to statistics on Racing.com.

He liked the riding effort of Cairns apprentice Emily Cass in landing Bet On Love her first career win. In the QTIS Three-Years-Old Maiden Handicap (1250m), Cass raced the brown filly well in front before sneaking away by three lengths on the turn and could not be run down from there.

“She was travelling so easily and left all her energy to the end – Emily rode her beautifully,” Chillemi said.

“That was the key. These young apprentices, they panic sometimes, tear the horse out in front and run the horse into the ground. But she did not panic today, she held the horse all together.”

Cass picked up a race to race double inside the first four races yesterday. Buoyancy started his career in the north with Chillemi, before transferring to Alby Molino in Townsville, and is now back on the Tablelands.

Meanwhile, Innisfail’s Little Stryker made it two wins on the bounce after a top ride from jockey Bonnie Thomson.

Thomson usually likes to head to the front but sat back in the Class 6 Plate (950m) and burst through at the end to record career win No.7 for the six-year-old bay mare.
