Pubs all ready to quench our pandemic thirst

- CHRIS CALCINO

SCHOONERS are polished, kegs are cracked and chefs are rearing to go as several pubs across the Far North open today for the first time in months.

Hospitality chain Australian Venue Co (AVC) is open

ing the doors to its pubs across the country today — and that means good news for regulars at five Cairns hotels.

Dunwoody’s, Mount Sheridan Tavern, Palm Cove Tavern, Trinity Beach Tavern and the Barron River Hotel will all be back on the tools after a five-week dry spell.

Social distancing rules mean the venues are restricted to 10 punters, with meals, at a time – so AVC has launched its “pub takeover package” for anyone who can gather nine mates and book ahead.

“Customers can take over their local for a two-hour private session, perfect for Sunday

family lunch, catch up with mates or even a work get-together ($60 minimum spend per person for 10 people),” a company spokesman said.

“Whether it’s a group of mates, a couple or an individual, there’s a guaranteed spot from first bounce to final siren with this package.”

Barron River Hotel venue manager Oliver Starling said staff were eager to get everything out of hibernation.

“Hopefully in the near future we will be able to welcome everyone back in greater numbers,” he said. “We’re taking it day-by-day but the team is really excited to come back.”
