Locals plunge into recovery

ICONIC tourist operation AJ Hackett has leaned into the coronavirus recovery with locals lining up to take the plunge out of lockdown.

The Smithfield bungy jumping attraction has reopened for limited numbers, with people jumping at the chance of a bargain deal.

“We have opened up our cafe and have limited bungy slots for locals; we have a special price to get them out of the COVID craziness,” general manager Danny Hughes said.

“We have been getting a very positive response; it has been really good for us to engage with the local community and to cement our new safety practices.”

This year AJ Hackett in Cairns marks 30 years of operation in the Far North. Mr Hughes said the company has been able to use lessons from other AJ Hackett sites to navigate the pandemic.

“Macau was reopening as we were closing,” Mr Hughes said. “They have been operating COVID-safe for six weeks now.”

He said by renewing its focus on the local market, the company could entice more people to join regular jumpers.

“We are seeing it as an opportunity to connect with the community,” Mr Hughes said.

The locals offer is open until the end of June.
