AMONG FRIENDS AGAIN

- ELLA BRADY, YEAR 5S, HOLY CROSS SCHOOL

LOCKED in home, or staying at school with hardly any of your friends, and looking at the screen all day.

Yes, the third one might sound interesting, but when you’ve done it for five weeks straight, it starts to get tiring and my eyes are sore.

All of the sport events are closed down, and if this gets worse, shops that sell supplies and food might close down too.

We all can get through this together though, remember, this will be over soon. This is what I kept thinking in the days following the lockdown.

I thought about how cool it would’ve been to do all of this cool stuff that I’ve seen on TV. But it wasn’t to be.

Maybe I am lucky to stay at school. I instantaneously ate my lunch, it was getting close for the bell to ring, for us to run to field B.

I ran near the bench and picked up some brown dead leaves off the ground.

Some I found were luckily still green. I like to crunch leaves. I brought them over near the shed, where a white wall with unexpected ants were on it.

I ripped a green string that was hanging off my hat and trapped all the ants.

Once I actually circled an ant so he could never go out, until the wind came and energetically pushed the mighty wall (string).

I actually felt bad for the ant, and it looked absolutely dead just sitting there, but don’t you think ants need a break?

You always see them running around. So let’s just take that as a favour for that miniature sized ant. I have felt trapped at times during the lockdown.

The oval is filled with people, I wonder how it’ll be when everyone comes back? I turned around, there was the area where the school hosted the usual assemblies and now morning assemblies that have happened every day of the five weeks since online learning. This was where all of the handball games and skipping were happening at lunchtime.

Lots of students get hooked on handball, so nearly all of the handball courts were filled.

And if everyone had been here, I bet all of them would have been full.

Sweat came off my head and I stepped into the lunch shed.

I picked my lunchbox earlier than usual.

There were a small number of lunchboxes on the metal tables. Before I knew it, a gigantic group of year 5 students came along the hallway.

Maybe there was a big number of year 5s after all. I quickly got my lunchbox and went to my bag.

I went into the classroom, finally, some cool air. I was very overjoyed, and sweaty. I stepped to my desk and sat on the chair. How great is it to have everyone back. I’m over the moon.

I don’t think anyone knows how the virus developed, all sorts of stories from people are getting me confused.

I mostly believe the story that is about the animals, not really about a lab, but hey, we might never know.

Thank goodness we can all be at school again.
