DEVELOPERS FLAG PLAN TO BUILD BEACH TOWERS
DEVELOPERS are making moves to build two six-storey apartment towers and a line of luxury duplexes just a stone’s throw from one of the city’s favourite beaches.
Mararna Street Pty Ltd has lodged a development application to execute the ambitious construction project on bushland at the corner of Moore and Mararna streets in Trinity Beach.
The project is just back from the Trinity Beach Palace – a favourite haunt for visiting celebrities and giants of industry.
However, this will be a much different proposal to that opulent tourist attraction.
Blueprints lodged with Cairns Regional Council reveal the two proposed six-storey towers will contain a total of 44 units and notch up a height of 21m.
Council planning guidelines state developers should pursue a 15m maximum height for new buildings – although that does not mean the proposal will be rejected.
“Council has previously determined that a suitable height of five storeys was appropriate for the adjoining property in the context of the locality and approved this project in February 2019,” the development application notes.
“Clearly, there is some acceptance that in dealing with the potential for undesirable development impacts that there are suitable grounds to support buildings beyond 15m where the visual impacts and management of character/ amenity have been considered reasonable.”
Existing homes across the road that may have their views affected by the new towers are, by and large, single-storey structures.
The two towers will be connected via a podium on the first floor, with the ground floor to be used for carparking.
Its apartments would be used for both short-term and residential living.
The proposal also outlines a plan to create four high-end duplexes in front of the towers.
These eight double-storey homes have been earmarked for the first stage of construction with the two towers to follow, one after the other.
The project is yet to come before the council for a decision.
