Training injury cruels Broncos
STRUGGLING Brisbane have suffered another setback with star NRL centre Kotoni Staggs injuring a hamstring in training yesterday.
Staggs was making a sprint at the club’s Red Hill base when he pulled up, before limping off.
The Broncos have since confirmed the 21-year-old will undergo scans in the coming days and he appears certain to miss Thursday’s match against Newcastle in Gosford.
“We’ll definitely miss him if he’s to be out this weekend,” Jamayne Isaako said.
“We all know what Tones brings to the team and how valuable he is within the team.”
Staggs’ injury is the last thing Broncos coach Anthony Seibold would have wanted after they suffered a third loss in a row when going down to
Manly last Thursday.
While Tevita Pangai Jnr is due to return from suspension and Alex Glenn completed training yesterday, the Broncos are already without David Fifita, Jake Turpin, Jesse Arthars and Jack Bird due to injury.
Broncos captain Glenn looks the main candidate to replace Staggs after filling in at centre for the remainder of yesterday’s session.
Isaako said the news fellow New Zealand international Issac Luke was poised to join the Broncos on a short-term deal had been a big boost.

CANTERBURY prop Aiden Tolman (pictured) was yesterday cleared of COVID-19 after his health scare resulted in the NRL postponing his club’s match against Sydney Roosters.
The league was forced to move yesterday afternoon’s fixture to tonight after Tolman was notified that a teacher at his child’s school tested positive for coronavirus.
The Laguna Street Public School in Sydney’s south has been closed until June 25, with a warning there’s a possibility children may have brought the virus home. The NRL was not willing to risk having a positive test returned just hours before kick-off, which would’ve thrown the schedule into chaos. The Bulldogs-Roosters game has been rescheduled to 7pm tonight, while yesterday’s St George Illawarra v Cronulla match at Campbelltown was brought forward to start at 4pm, instead of 6pm.
“We believe the risk is minimal but we’re not going to take the risk,” ARL Commission chair Peter V’landys said before Tolman’s test. # Play today
