PORT Douglas could host the first major festival in Queensland this year with the Port Shorts Film Festival confirmed.

A free “Best Of Port Shorts” is scheduled to be held in Port Douglas on October 17.

The Douglas Shire may be one of the worst hit local economies in Australia as a result of COVID-19 but Port Shorts film director Alison George hoped they could still put on a free coronavirus-compliant event for up to 500 people.

The event will again be hosted by legendary Aussie actor Stephen Curry, who said “I’ll walk up there or parachute in if I have to.”

Said Ms George: “When the impacts of COVID-19 hit Australia it became clear we couldn’t go ahead with the 2020 Port Shorts Film Festival as originally planned.”

“We instead focused on producing a Virtual Film Festival featuring the ‘best of’ Port Shorts … so we can showcase the amazing quality of short films over the last five years and help promote the destination at a time our tourism industry desperately needs all the help it can get.

“In further discussions with our stakeholders and in particular Douglas Shire Council, an opportunity came along for

Port Shorts to provide our community with some great entertainment and show the rest of Australia the Douglas Shire is open for business.”

The Port Shorts Virtual Film Festival will be free on www.portshorts.com on October 16-17. Details of the free live Best Of Port Shorts event in Port Douglas and how to register for tickets will be available on the Port Shorts website next month.
