Busiest roads to get an upgrade
SOME of the city’s busiest streets are set for major rehabilitation works as Cairns Regional Council rolls out more than $5 million in roadworks from Edmonton to Palm Cove.
Last week’s 2020-21 budget announcement revealed a record $181 million capital works spend as the council tries to invest in infrastructure and construction jobs to offset the economic effects of the COVID-19 tourism crisis.
It has wasted no time setting the ball rolling with Wednesday’s council meeting set to decide on an expansive road surface rehabilitation schedule for the coming year.
“Council manages approximately 1270km of roads,” a report tabled ahead of the meeting says.
“The value of the road pavement equates to approximately $384 million of council’s asset value, which represents about 24 per cent of council’s entire transport asset value.”
The pavement rehabilitation program is rolled out every year in order to keep the road network up to scratch.
About $2.3 million of this year’s budget will come from State Government funding through the Works for Queensland program.

“Previous inspections have identified road areas that require rehabilitation.”
Today’s meeting will also vote on a $4 million program to improve suburban streetscapes through kerb and channel renewal, and upgrades to unsealed road shoulders and footpaths.
