Freight on airport’s radar
MUNDOO Airport, at Innisfail on the Cassowary Coast, could be the site of a major development following the council’s call for expressions of interest in a freight hub.
Cassowary Coast Council asked for the EOI “to develop a mid-scale multi-modal freight transport hub based at the Mundoo Airport, nearby industrial land and including the only phytosanitary treatment facility in northern Queensland.”
The request has followed an investigation into the existing airport site and surrounding land use opportunities.
In 2018 the council developed a report that examined the possibilities of variously scaled logistics hub developments based on critical planning parameters, design aircraft, infrastructure requirements and financial feasibility.
EOI documents have detailed the value of the hub, which would assist in “establishing Northern Australia as the food bowl for Asia”.
The development would also provide a “premium quality secured aerospace precinct with logistics capacity for outbound agriculture and provide a logistics hub for inbound freight”.
The call comes as a 4.7ha property alongside the airport, also known as Innisfail Aerodrome, has been listed for sale at $750,000.
The triangular parcel of land borders the airport and, pending approval, has potential access to the runway.
The land is 7km from the Innisfail CBD and a short walk from Mundoo State School.
“This fully fenced property is currently running cattle and horses,” a spokesman for A and A Realty said.
“Positioned on a corner block, and with the airport runway bordering the property, this would be an aviator’s delight,
“The options are endless whether you are after a lifestyle block close to all amenities or for the developer looking to develop into several blocks of land.”
The property includes a lowset four-bedroom home with two bedrooms airconditioned, tiled throughout and town water.
There is three-phase power at the house, a bore and large shed with power and water.
