Ironman events to boost tourism

THE Far North’s tourism operators and leaders are set for a major cash injection on the road to recovery from the coronavirus pandemic after one of the largest sporting events confirmed its return in 2020.

Ironman Cairns and Ironman 70.3 Cairns will go ahead on September 27, using the same routes as previous years – from Palm Cove to Port Douglas to the Esplanade – and held under an approved COVIDSafe plan.

Ironman Oceania head of operations Rebecca Van Pooss said that while they were expecting a smaller turnout, it was still significant they had the chance to showcase Cairns.

“It would really help the region by delivering economic impacts generally but specifically the tourism sector,” she said.

“We’ve had incredible support from council and local organisations and we’re grateful for that.”

Megan McKay, owner of Splash Seafood Restaurant on the Esplanade, said anything that would generate extra visitors to the region was “definitely what we need right now”.

“It’d bring a buzz to the city and a vibrancy to all the outdoor dining on the Esplanade,” she said.

Ms McKay, who has owned the restaurant for 18 years, said September might work out better as it would inject another boost following the peak holiday season in June-July.

With Port Douglas being one of the hardest hit, Sailaway operator Steve Edmonson said it was important to have events returning.

“Checking out the Reef and the tropics are wonderful for post events and a great excuse to chill out,” he said.

Cairns Mayor Bob Manning said Ironman would bring an injection of visitors and marketing for the region.

“This is an important event for our tourism, sporting and businesses communities, which is why we did everything we could to work with the organisers to facilitate a successful outcome,” he said.

Tourism Tropical North Queensland CEO Mark Olsen welcomed the announcement.

“Ironman helped establish this region as the ideal place for sporting events and these events have helped boost the visitor economy,” he said.

“Events will help give Australians a reason to travel to Cairns and ensure we continue to grow domestic visitation.”

The 2020 event will also provide qualifying slots to the 2021 Ironman World Championships in Hawaii.
