Le Brocq shocks with maiden Supercars win

- JAMES PHELPS

JACK Le Brocq has become a V8 giant killer by sneaking under Scott McLaughlin’s guard to shock Sydney with his first Supercars win.

On the day of the underdog, after Nick Percat upstaged Fabian Coulthard to claim the second instalment of the Sydney SuperSprint, Le Brocq became the sport’s 79th winner when he added his name to the famous list with a flawless final fling.

The Tickford Racing youngster was over the moon after fulfilling his dream of becoming a V8 race winner.

“It hasn’t sunk in so I don’t know how to feel at the moment,” Le Brocq said after adding his name to a list that includes Peter Brock, Dick Johnson and Jamie Whincup.

“It is just unreal. I’m over the moon and I just can’t thank the guys in the team for giving me that car and the shot.”

With back-to-back champion and eventual round winner McLaughlin rear-ended on lap 8, Le Brocq finished in front of Andre Heimgarnter and Todd Hazlewood.

“I am a little lost for words,” he said. “It is a big honour to join the winners’ list and I am just now hoping to keep on chipping on.”

Percat claimed his second win of the year in the earlier race, when he blitzed the field on a double soft-tyre strategy.

Throwing all of his best rubber at race two in an all-ornothing bid, the Brad Jones Racing driver flogged the hard-tyre field for his second Sydney win.

McLaughlin’s collision failed to dent his bid for a championship three-peat, with the DJR Team Penske record breaker extending his series lead.
