Tony, Bayview Heights (CP, 8/8), the PM for weeks publicly attacked WA, Qld and Vic (Labor states) re border closures and COVID responses. Now, he has withdrawn WA legal action and is helping the Vic Premier. The PM is now helping not criticising. If only the PM hadn’t wasted three weeks, the COVID response could have been so much better.

Please stop publishing the wild ramblings of COVID conspiracy theorists in your letters/texts section. There are people in the community who will believe the rhetoric about masks being ineffective and who will place themselves and others at greater risk as a result. It baffles me that Australians are dying from a disease that we can take simple precautions against, yet some have the audacity to label it all a hoax and refuse take it seriously. Stop being selfish and do your bit to protect the vulnerable. Doctor, Cairns

Western society made its biggest advances during periods of “light touch” government. We now live in a time of “heavy-handed” government. It’s now not just women and minorities with fewer rights, everyone has lost rights under the guise of this pandemic. Do you think we’ll get them back without a fight? Joanne, Manunda

Don’t know why we had to spend

$60 million on a coronavirus tracing app. My wife’s bank card statement tells me a whole lot — Coles, IGA, Best and Less, hairdresser, movies, butcher, get the picture?

ON other matters

That photo of cast netting (Northern exposure, 8/8) looks like a pelican in flight.

Paul Green will be named as head coach of Brisbane Broncos in coming days for the 2021 NRL season.

Joe Marano of Canegrowers (CP 8/8). Spot on. The place for the alarmists who claim fertiliser reaches the reef to produce their proof was at that Senate inquiry. They didn’t because they couldn’t. End the grants to those alarmists, now.

Any foreigners at the rave party at Wangetti on Saturday, just deport them no ifs, buts or maybes. No respect for our community. Locals, no warning just fine them, name them, shame them.

True Facts, Cairns

Re unions Bill, Mooroobool (8/8). Couple of things you forgot, Bill. You just have to look at labour hire companies that are not unionised and see how the people are treated — 20 to 30 people crowded into a house, charged half their wages for accommodation owned by the employers, the other half of their wages way under the award. You only have to look at the FairWork site to see how many employers are ripping off workers’ wages. At least with a union, they take these unscrupulous employers to court to try and get the wages that were stolen off them. I was in a union all my working life they represented me and got me back more in stolen benefits then it cost me in union fees.
