NEW ITALIAN TASTE IN TOWN

- JACK LAWRIE

A RESTAURANT offering mouth-watering Italian cuisine unlike any other in Cairns will open in the CBD this week, kicking off with drinks to whet the appetite.

Restaurateurs Alessandra Giannascoli and Wendy Lombardo have been hard at work in the past month getting L’Abruzzese ready on Lake Street.

The pair ran a cafe and restaurant at Magnetic Island off Townsville, and decided to do the same after moving to Cairns.

Ms Lombardo said the new restaurant would focus on small-portion dishes with an aperitif. “We're filling up quick for bookings on opening night,” she said.

Ms Giannascoli said the main meals would be handmade pasta dishes.

“Normally, when you think of small portions you think tapas, but this is going to be proper food with meat, vegetable and pasta selections,” she said.

“You can have a ‘tour’ of Italian food by picking different dishes and putting together a main that you like.

“Our food comes from all sorts of different regions … my favourite is tortelloni with coral trout.”

L’Abruzzese opens on Thursday at 94 Lake Street.

Ms Lombardo said there was much to be done in the lead-up to opening. “It’s been big days, but we’ve been through it before, we knew what we’d be getting into.”
