The Cairns Post

MOVING WITH THE TIMES BUT AT HOME IN OUR CITY

- Jennifer Spilsbury Editor

IT’S a grand old dame – befitting the maturity and grandeur of the oldest business in Cairns that operates behind its stately walls. Its beautiful Corinthian columns and distinctive roof harks back to a different era. It almost feels like I’m from some golden Greek or Roman age when I walk through her impressive front entrance.

But once inside the blue doors I hear the tapping of keyboards and various tones of familiar voices as my colleagues talk with clients and journos ask probing questions on your behalf.

The Cairns Post is more than skindeep – it’s what’s on the inside that matters most.

We are selling our Abbott Street building which staff have been walking into since 1909; the virtual for-sale sign has been put out.

And I know there will be nostalgia if the sale is successful, perhaps even a feeling that we’re somehow leaving.

Nothing could be further from the truth.

For a business that has stood the test of time, the Cairns Post has a long track record in being deft at making smart commercial decisions.

The time is right for our modern newsroom and dynamic advertising team to make the move to a new HQ, where we can continue to produce 24x7 news for both our print product and online as well as embrace new adventures.

This sale will be yet another entry on our historical timeline which dates back to May 16, 1882.

Simply put, this building no longer suits our purposes.

Our readers and partners have turned to this region’s biggest and most trusted news brand throughout the pandemic and we are as committed to serving our community in this new era as fiercely as we have for the past 139 years – with feet always on Far Northern soil.
