HEAR ME ROAR ON STAGE

BE INSPIRED BY KIDS:

- ERIN MAHER AND ISLA TOMLEY, YEAR 5, ST ANDREW’S CATHOLIC COLLEGE

THE Lion King Kids production was a great opportunity to learn new things about musical theatre and to make fun memories.

It started with many days of practice and hard work leading up to the big day of the auditions.

On audition day, we were all buzzing with excitement waiting for our turn to prove we could be in this amazing musical.

To prove we were good enough, we had to recite a piece of script, show the creative team our dancing skills and sing part of I Just Can’t Wait to be King.

After the auditions were held, everyone was eager to find out what roles we got. There were 51 people in the cast, with 17 people having speaking roles.

To prepare for the show, we had rehearsals for seven hours each week.

Lion King ensemble members would meet in the theatre on Mondays and Wednesdays for two hours and on Sundays for three hours. You had to be committed.

Despite having to work extra hours, we enjoyed our experience.

For the lead roles with lines, on Mondays performers had to stay two hours after school to rehearse.

During these rehearsals, we would have to practise songs and sing with Mrs Thorpe and learn dances with our choreographer Mrs Mason.

Lots of hard work and dedication went into these rehearsals.

After the Easter holidays, at last it was show time. People were practising like crazy and teachers were getting lighting and sound cues ready.

Amazing make-up artists and students from the senior years were helping us put on make-up and getting us into our amazing costumes, which were made by the amazingly talented Mrs Hannan.

There were also costumes that were kindly sent to us from Edge Hill State School. Ms Curtis and Mrs Hogan from Edge Hill State School helped us out so much.

On the opening day, the lights turned on and the music started to play. People in the audience clapped their hands as we walked on stage to start the first song. It was so much fun.

After the five shows had been and passed we all felt like a huge weight had been lifted off our shoulders. All our hard work had paid off.

We would like to thank the whole production team for helping us make this amazing show. Mr Lee for being an amazing director and Mrs Symes for helping us with everything.

We would also like to thank Mrs Mason, our very talented choreographer, along with Mrs Hannan and Mr Scott for making our very detailed costumes and masks.

Thank you to Sue Kim, Miss Grossman and Ms Jenkins for helping us with our super-amazing makeup. Mrs Jenkins also helped Mrs Mason with our choreography.

Mr Jennings was our awesome tech guy, helping with lighting, stage decoration and music.

We would also like to thank Mrs Thorpe for helping us with learning all of our songs. There were so many people who helped out. We are so grateful for everyone’s help from so many people.

There were 51 junior years’ students in the show and about 50 helpers with the event. It was an amazing experience and a great project for our college to have undertaken.

The Lion King Kids are amazing students that tried their hardest and created an amazing musical. We are so proud of what they achieved in eight weeks. It is an experience that we won’t forget.
