Live music project is kicking off
FOLK singer and event organiser Charm Quayle, stand-up comedian Michael Crawford, and Far North musician Bobby Maguire are ready to amp up an event that started out as an underground open music night. Aimed at trying to help Cairns bands to earn a bit of cash at the Elixir Music Bar, the Underground Live Music event is now cementing itself as an outdoor event.
WHAT started as an underground open music night for Cairns bands to earn some cash has turned into an outdoor club show putting them on the map.
Cairns folk singer Charm Quayle started Underground Live Music at Elixir Music Bar, running it every second Thursday of the month.
In February she put on an Underground show at North Cairns Tigers AFL grounds, where she works the bar, and is now looking at making it a regular event, with a second show set for June 26.
“When I started it with Skye (Rixon, from Elixir) we wanted to support original artists in Cairns and give them a bit of cash for their sets,” she said.
“With this we can do them bigger and louder and pay the bands more.
“After we did the first one in February, I noticed a few of the bands I put on getting more work, so I think it helps get them spotted for festivals and gives them that chance to perform for a crowd.
“The first one did pretty good, but we’d like this one to be bigger. It’s all original music and it supports the bands and the AFL club.”
The line-up consists of nine local acts including Eddie Skiba, The Zephyrbees, Bobby Maguire Band and Paully P.
Bobby Maguire said the event was upbeat with good food and facepainting and art from local artists, making it great for families.
Just 200 tickets are available, with $50 early bird tickets available before June 11 at ticketebo.com.au.
