Good fun will be in the bag

- ARUN SINGH MANN

Cairns Show will crank into full colour and high speed today with no sign of Covid restricting its offering. Cook Islands twins Martin and Joe Joseph received an early inspection of the showbags with Showbag Warehouse’s Kelly McBride. Aside from Sideshow Alley, organisers have focused on offering families more free things to do.

MELVILLE Entertainment’s animal nursery is set to keep kids and adults hooked for hours with some ripper additions at the Cairns Show this year as operator Craig Melville shares an obvious yet overlooked trick to making the most of your visit.

“It’s a whole psychology – you have to have the cute and cuddly animals for kids, and all the interesting ones for the adults,” Mr Melville said.

Among the “interesting” animals were Mediterranean mini donkeys and a miniature Texan longhorn, he said. However, the nursery’s main attraction would be an Indian runner ducks race – the only one in Australia.

“I bet my wife that ducks wouldn’t race – they’re too dumb,” he said.

“But she’s trained them. They don’t get crowd-shy and we’ve added obstacles. We’re the only ones in the country to do it.

“We’ve got 24 ducks, and we’ll have three races per session, about four sessions per day.”

Mr Melville said for the best value while visiting the animals, show goers should buy a handful of feed.

“Give them a bit of food and they’ll be real friendly, otherwise they’ll be thinking ‘what’s in it for me?’“
