Hospital kids have bags of fun

-

A NUMBER of kids recovering at the Cairns Hospital Children’s Ward received a much-welcomed boost on Tuesday, as part of the Cairns Show came to them.

Showbags are one of the many highlights of visiting the annual show, and on Tuesday, the crew from the Showbag Warehouse shared that joy with sick children confined to their hospital bed.

“The Cairns Show has a long history of bringing joy to the community,” Cairns Show secretary manager Carmen Ferreira said.

“Our generous exhibitors know that these children would love to be at this year’s Cairns Show, so they have each donated to this appeal to bring show excitement to a sick child’s day.”

All the children in the ward received a fun-packed showbag.

Among the children receiving a bag was Gia Smith, 5, of Mareeba, who is now in the remission phase of her leukaemia recovery and Showbag Warehouse’s

Kelly McBride said it was smiles like Gia’s that made the Cairns Show “one of the best”.

“We’re here to give joy back to the children and their parents because there’s nothing worse than when you’re sick and stuck in hospital and you see the show happening and you see all your friends going,” Ms McBride said.

“We just want to give joy to the family and give hope. Just the smiles on the people’s faces, it’s priceless.

“This is the best part of the north run that I enjoy doing – coming to the hospital and giving out showbags.”

Cairns Show Association president Ian Allen said it was a great gesture from Showbag Warehouse, which handed out up to 40 showbags.

“The most joyful thing I get from the Cairns Show is seeing the young children smile, and now they’re doing it in hospital too,” he said.

The Cairns Show is on until Friday.
