THIS year OLHOC had three sports days instead of one.

Our PE teacher, Mr Henson, did it this way so that students got to take part in a lot more events.

Year 4-6 went to Barlow Park on Thursday, June 17, for their athletics carnival. First there were the house war cries, then finals for the hurdles and 800m.

After that, everyone participated in the field events with seven rotations for high jump, long jump, discus, shot put, triple jump, cross ball and tunnel ball.

The day finished with the 100m and 200m final and finally the 4x100m relay. There was also a house shuttle run while the runners in the relay were getting ready.

On Tuesday, June 22, prep and year 1 had their sports day on the school oval and on Thursday, June 24, it was the turn of years 2 and 3.

We had to wear our coloured shirts for our house team. The classes were split into year 3 girls, year 3 boys, year 2 girls and year 2 boys to do the different challenges.

Firstly, Mr Henson showed us what to do for each of the eight activities. Each group had 20 minutes at each activity. Year 6 students helped run the activities including doing the computer scoring.

The activities were: vortex throw, soccer ball kick, football kick, shuttle run, hurdles, 100m, 200m and a roller-board relay.

We got to race other people and that was the best part. There were semi-finals and then finals.

You could get ribbons depending on how well you did. Only the students who came 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th got ribbons.

The parents were allowed to come to cheer everyone on and no one was bored because while you were waiting for your turn you could cheer for other people in your house.

“Sports day was fun because we tried to win ribbons for our teams,” said Ruby Newby (year 2).

Emily Hillier (year 2) said: “I enjoyed it because there was lots of running.”

At the end there was a presentation in the hall to indicate which team won. Mackillop won with 136 points. Everyone in green house was very happy. Mrs Gameau took a photo of all the Mackillop students with the trophy.
