DAIRY BOOST KEY
INCREASING aged care residents’ dairy intake could help reduce falls and bone fractures.
Australian researchers conducted a two-year study of residents in 60 aged care homes. Half were given their regular menu and the other half were given more dairy products.
They then compared the number of falls, fractures and deaths over the two years. Adding more dairy to residents’ diets reduced the risk of all fractures by 33 per cent and 46 per cent for hip fractures. The risk of falls also lowered by 11 per cent.
