LIONS’ HEARTS LEFT BROKEN
LEICHHARDT’s dream of completing an undefeated 2021 campaign was brought to a heartbreaking end, when they fell 2-1 in extra time to a lucky Townsville Brothers.
The Lions went through the FNQ Reserves Women season with an unblemished 16-0 record, scoring 105 goals and allowing just six as they won the league by six points.
That record was saved in the final seconds of last week’s grand final, when a late goal forced the decider against Edge Hill United into extra time, and then penalties – which they won 7-6.
The women in red and black were forced to play their second 120-minute epic in as many weeks at Tiger Park, but their hearts were broken when Brothers found a matchwinning goal with one of the last strikes of the game.
It ended a phenomenal season for Leichhardt, who claimed the FNQ double.
