‘No future’ for kids if we trash climate

- CLARE ARMSTRONG

BALANCING cost of living with action on climate change is the key to a healthy future for Australia’s children, a Sydney family says.

Greenhills Beach mum Genene Wilcoxon said she believed “things need to change” in the climate debate and welcomed Australia’s net-zero emissions by 2050 commitment for the sake of her children Minnie-Lola, 4, and Sonny, 2.

“They are the future,” she said. “What future are they going to have if we don’t address climate?” Ms Wilcoxon said it was up to governments to find ways to balance cost of living pressures with reducing carbon.

“One hundred per cent, there has to be a way to afford it,” she said. Ms Wilcoxon said Australia must take steps to avoid more climate disasters like the horrific 2019 summer bushfires.

“Mr parents were visiting from the UK when the fires happened and they had never seen anything like it,” she said.

“It can’t happen again.”
