PEDESTRIAN SAFETY

-

IT is always shocking to read of an alleged hit-and-run incident, such as that involving Caleb Madjeric on Golden Grove Drive, Bentley Park, on Saturday night (CP, 26/10). I cannot understand why the motorist would fail to stop and render assistance.

It is also disturbing to check Google Street View and find Golden Grove Drive has no footpaths. Indeed, the whole neighbourhood appears to be another disappointing example of car-oriented suburbia.

Although I don’t know if Mr Madjeric was walking along, or crossing, Golden Grove Drive when he was hit, the street would be much safer with a footpath. Also, the speed limit should be no more than 50km/h.

While Cairns Regional Council brags about making the CBD more attractive and walkable, including reduced speed limits for safety, it neglects the suburbs where most Cairns residents live.

I trust Mr Madjeric makes a full and speedy recovery, and the alleged offender faces justice. Frank Pagram, Mooroobool
