CAPTAIN: ROACH NEEDS SUPPORT AT REP LEVEL

- MATTHEW MCINERNEY

IT WAS supposed to be a historic first day-night limited overs representative clash in Cairns, but instead ended with an unwanted slice of history and a call to arms by Far North Fusion captain Dan Parnell for his team to step up.

Far North went winless against North Queensland in Cairns for the first time, as former FNQ cricketers Chris Stanger and Lachlan Ford helped lead the Townsville team to victory.

Jake Roach was at his menacing best with bat and ball, providing most of the resistance in both games, but Parnell said his team simply had to be better if they are to salvage a positive result from the North Queensland Open Zone Championships.

“I thought we played well in patches but didn’t execute in the big moments,” Parnell said. “Roachy and Angus (Warnock) kept us in the 50over game but we couldn’t finish.

“Roach is a standout for us, in the field as well. Hopefully we can show him some kind of support in the next games so we can get a good result.”

NQ also won both U21 fixtures, and after the Monsoons ended the Fusion’s run at the Bulls Masters Country Challenge, Townsville’s rep side owns bragging rights between the fierce regional rivals.

Cricketers return to their club sides for first grade action this weekend, then travel to Mackay’s Harrup Park on November 6-7 for the final days of the four-game series.
