Tigers lead the top contenders for MVP

- MATTHEW MCINERNEY

THREE members of Edge Hill United’s all-conquering Premier Women’s team are among the finalists for the FNQ Premier League’s MVP award.

FQ Far North and Gulf will celebrate its 2021 season at a function at the Cairns Colonial Club on Saturday, with major awards presented for all eight senior divisions.

The Tigers dominated the 2021 FNQ Women’s Premier League, capping an undefeated season with victory in the Crad Evans to complete the second treble of the program’s history.

These are six leading contenders for the MVP award.

FARRAH BOUSTEAD (Mareeba United)

Regarded as the leading goalkeeper in the FNQ Women’s Premier League, Boustead is always one of the top performers in the Bulls’ well-performing sides.

While Mareeba United’s back four deserves credit, the club’s standing as the secondbest defensive team in the league has a lot to do with Boustead’s brilliance in goal.

CIARA FOWLER (Edge Hill United)

Arguably the best defensive midfielder in the competition, Ciara’s ability to not only create – and score from – opportunities, but to get back and do the work off the ball played a big role in the Tigers’ success.

She often made the crucial tackle or pass to stop her opposition from advancing and put her team back in a scoring position, and all while exercising an elite level of ball control.

LOUISE FOWLER (Edge Hill United)

The youngest in this list, Louise is one of the most hardworking and tireless midfielders in the competition.

She has a high work rate on both sides of the ball, and while the grand final MVP scored plenty of goals this year, she created more for her teammates through her ball control and vision.

SIOBHAN (Edge Hill United)

MACKEN

Arguably the best and most complete finisher in regional Queensland, Macken was among the leading goalscorers again this season.

An outstanding header of the ball, she capped another prolific campaign with four goals in the club’s Crad Evans victory.

ASTIA NECKEBROECK (JCU Strikers)

The focal point of JCU Strikers’ attack over the past few seasons, it should come as no surprise Neckebroeck is considered among the best in the Premier League.

A standout whenever JCU hits the field, Neckebroeck’s finishing ability, and her willingness to work in defence, has played a big part in her team regularly reaching the finals.

VICTORIA OWOKRAN (Mareeba United)

The Bulls striker put together another outstanding season in orange, scoring more than a goal per game to be her team’s premier goalscorer.

A member of the FNQ’s representative pathway, Owokran has fast become one of the best young talents to watch as she showcases her speed, agility and strikepower.
